How MS Can Affect Life Expectancy
How MS Can Affect Life Expectancy
7 Complications of complications of multiple sclerosis (MS) MS is a lifelong condition that can affect general health. With the proper management of symptoms, people living with MS can stay active for many years. And not everyone will have complications. However, some complications are common for many people living with MS. Here are seven common problems that affect people with MS, and ways to help manage them. Corticosteroids are no longer the first line of defense against MS. This is due to corticosteroids and the development of more effective MS treatments. Now corticosteroids are usually used only to make an attack disappear quickly. Complications of the use of short-term oral corticosteroids include: Few people should take long-term corticosteroids. However, if you take a long-term corticosteroid, you may be at greater risk of complications that include: MS causes interruptions in signals between the brain and urinary tract and intestine systems. This means that sometimes the body does not receive the message that it is time to release the waste. Sometimes nerve damage can also affect brain signals along with muscle function in the body parts that release waste. These bladder and intestine problems often include: The bladder may be too active or not completely empty. To help with bowel and bladder problems, some people follow a high fiber diet or take medications such as fiber agents or stool softeners. Others receive nervous stimulation and physical therapy to help them recover some bowel and bladder function. According to , people living with MS experience higher rates of depression and bipolar affective disorder. The reasons for these rates are complex. Depression can be connected to changes in brain tissue caused by the EM. It can also be the result of the emotional challenges of living with the condition. Some people with MS can feel a sense of isolation and face economic, economic and social challenges. Bipolar affective disorder may also be a side effect of MS progression or certain medications such as corticosteroids. Treatments for MS mental health-related problems include medicines such as tricyclic antidepressants and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (ISRS). Different forms of psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy can also help manage symptoms. Organizations such as and have member resources to help connect people living with the EM, and provide strategies to address the challenges of the EM, including mental health issues. Vision changes occur as MS progresses. You may experience some of these symptoms for a short time, or may become permanent. Possible vision complications include: Treatments can focus on helping you manage vision changes. This might involve using an eye patch if you have a double vision, or taking medications to control nistagm. Many people believe that MS only affects mobility, but about half of people living with the condition develop cognitive problems, such as memory loss and slower intellectual processing. These issues could also lead to a reduction in problem solving, verbal, abstract reasoning and visual and spatial capabilities. These changes in cognition are probably from brain atrophy or injuries caused by the EM. Cognitive changes do not have to significantly impact the daily lives of someone with MS. Medicines and cognitive rehabilitation can help people preserve cognitive function. The support of family and friends is also an important resource. People with MS may have a feeling of numbness or other physical sensations. Dysesthesia is a painful form of these sensations. This condition can cause: The feeling of chest oppression that makes it difficult to breathe. This condition can be a form of dysesthesia, or the result of a spasm. Often, this symptom passes by itself without treatment. If the symptom persists, there are medications to treat sensory complications, including amitriptyline, duloxetine, baclofen and gabapentine. The VTE occurs when a blood clot travels through the bloodstream to a vessel, causing a blockage. One published by MS Trust UK in 2014 found that those living with MS had a 2.6 times greater risk of having VTE than the general population. This is partly because people living with MS often have risk factors for VTE. These include:To reduce the risk of VTE, people with EM can focus on overall care, including eating a healthy diet and improving mobility as much as possible. MS is largely an individual journey, but you can get support to help meet your physical, medical and emotional needs. Learning about complications and how to prevent or manage them is a way to be proactive about your health. Contact those who care about you when you are dealing with MS complications. You can face the challenges of life with MS with the help of your family, friends and doctors. Last medical review on May 24, 2018 Read this next series of words
